Make Waking Up Less Awful

Unless you’re gifted by being a “morning person,” waking up on time is probably one of the hardest things you do every day. As you probably know, a consistent sleep schedule is absolutely key to personal success, so getting your morning routine in check is essential. Fortunately, there are some tricks that help make waking up a little easier. Here’s how to wake up in the morning, on time, every day.

ALARM CLOCK

With the introduction of smartphones, many people have ditched the traditional alarm clock in favor of their cell phones. This adds convenience, since you don’t need to buy an alarm clock, set it every night, or worry about its batteries — it’s all in your phone. The problem with this method, though, is that a cell phone is portable. That means it’s easy to hold on to while you’re in bed, and on top of that, people tend to keep theirs near them while they sleep.

If your phone’s with you when it wakes you up, it doesn’t incentivise you to get out of bed. You don’t even have to sit up to turn it off!

Keeping an alarm clock somewhere else in your room — somewhere you can’t reach from your bed — is a great way to motivate yourself to get up. You can’t doze off if there’s a loud alarm ringing through the room!

TRADITIONAL ALARM CLOCK

As convenient as smartphones are, they aren’t always the most reliable pieces of technology. You might’ve heard a friend complain about a phone alarm that didn’t go off, or a cell phone that shut off unexpectedly. For something as important as your sleep schedule — and getting to work or class on time — it might be good to invest in something a little more reliable.

A traditional alarm clock is a great way to keep your wake-up time regular. Grab one that uses the outlet as a main power source and batteries as a backup. Alarm clocks that solely rely on the outlet for power fall victim to brief power outages. Look for other features that are important to you, too. There are alarm clocks that go off every day without needing to be reset, for example. Find your perfect alarm clock to help you commit to your sleep schedule.

DAYLIGHT

Natural sunlight helps you wake up more effectively than artificial light. The best way to take advantage of this is to sleep without curtains and wake up with the sunrise. Realistically, though, not everyone wants to wake up that early. Other things you can do are open the curtains immediately after you wake up or use a daylight lamp.

Daylight lamps simulate sunlight better than standard light bulbs. Some of these lamps will even run on a timer like an alarm clock and brighten gradually to mimic the sunrise. This is a great option for anyone who has trouble getting out of bed in the morning. Don’t forget to put your daylight lamp across the room, just like your alarm clock!

Try these tips to make waking up easier, and see if you’re able to get on a consistent schedule!
